Energy-Efficient Windows for Iowa Homes in 2027: Why SoftLite Stands Out
Iowa weather asks a lot of a window. Cold, windy winters, humid summers, and big swings in between all put pressure on the glass, the frame, and the installation. As we head into 2027, more homeowners are asking the same question: what actually makes a window energy efficient, and which one is right for my home?
At Midwest Seamless, we've been helping Des Moines-area families since 1963, and we're Iowa's only SoftLite partner. Here's how we think about choosing windows that keep your home comfortable and your energy bills in check.

"Smart Windows" vs. Energy-Efficient Windows
You'll see the term "smart windows" a lot. It often refers to electronically tinting glass, which is a specialty product and a separate category. For most Iowa homeowners, the biggest gains come from the fundamentals: strong insulation, quality glass, tight construction, and a careful installation. That's where we focus, and it's where SoftLite has built its reputation.
SoftLite's Commitment to Energy Efficiency
SoftLite reports being named an ENERGY STAR® Partner of the Year by the EPA every year since 2014, and earning the Sustained Excellence award every year since 2016. SoftLite windows are designed to meet ENERGY STAR requirements, which helps homeowners lower energy costs and reduce their home's energy use. You can read more on SoftLite's ENERGY STAR page.
What to Look For in an Energy-Efficient Window
ENERGY STAR® label and NFRC ratings. The U-factor measures how well a window keeps heat in (lower is better), and the solar heat gain coefficient (SHGC) measures how much sun heat comes through.
Glass package. Double- or triple-pane glass, low-E coatings, and gas fills all affect performance. Not sure which fits your home and budget? Our double-pane vs. triple-pane guide walks through it.
Frame and sash construction. Insulated vinyl frames and well-built corners help a window hold its shape and seal over time.
Installation quality. Even the best window underperforms if it's installed poorly, so installation is a big part of what we do.
Warranty. Look for clear, written coverage.
SoftLite Window Lines We Install
SoftLite offers several product lines built around different priorities. Classic Plus focuses on energy efficiency and comfort, Pro Series is designed for strong thermal performance with a wide range of options, and Imperial Elite is SoftLite's top-of-the-line option. We'll help you compare them for your home. See how SoftLite stacks up in our SoftLite windows comparison.
What Happened to the Window Tax Credit?
You may have read that energy-efficient windows qualify for a federal tax credit. That credit ended: under recent federal legislation, windows placed in service after December 31, 2025 no longer qualify for the federal Energy Efficient Home Improvement Credit. Your savings still come from lower energy use and a more comfortable home. We recommend checking with your local utility for any current rebate programs and talking with a tax professional about your situation. We're happy to share product ratings and documentation on request.
